Short-trip oil change timing

I do my own oil changes on ramps and stick to 5k miles, but most of my driving is short trips — about 8 miles round trip with lots of cold starts. Would bumping it to 3k be smarter for engine longevity, or should I keep 5k and double down on preventative checks like monthly leak inspections and swapping the air filter when it looks dusty?

With lots of cold starts and “8 miles round trip,” I’d treat it as severe service and do 3–4k or 6 months, whichever comes first — short trips are rough.
